Ghana Food

Rachel and I surprised some of the locals at a little outdoor restaurant that is open very sporadically, because not only did we sit down to eat the local fare, but we did so just like the locals with our hands. The meal was basically a bowl of broth with part of a boiled fish in it. On the side was a huge clump of mashed and fermented corn, that was the consistency of very solid mashed potatoes. So you take a handful of the corn paste and dip it into the fish broth and soak it up like that. Then you have to wash your hands off in a little bowel of water they give you, and pick apart the fish you've uncovered. As I don't like fish, it wasn't my favorite meal, but Rachel thought it was quite nice.

Otherwise we've eaten a lot of rolls and jam, with some peanut butter Rachel was able to smuggle over here. One other dish we've had a few times is a fried chicken drumstick with rice in a red greasy sauce that is pretty hot. Mostly tastey, but hot enough to start getting to you by the end of the meal. Another somewhat oddity is that they sell most of their water in clear plastic bag pouches. So you have to bite open a corner and then suck the water out. I guess that is somewhat common in underdeveloped countries, but I'm a much bigger fan of just getting a glass from the tap...
